The other day someone asked me (Tiffany) a question that really made me think. “What things in your home do you miss most when you’re on the road?”
Sleep is always my biggest concern, so the kids’ bedrooms would be #1 on the list. I have to admit that I’m always worried at first that they’ll wake each other up constantly, but they never cease to amaze me. It always turns out better than I expected, and it’s actually really cute to see them bonding in their room.
Secondly, I miss my oven. I love cooking, and when we got the Airstream we opted out of an oven for more storage space, getting a convection microwave instead. I’ve only ever been brave enough to bake a pizza and cookies in it. 🤷🏻♀️
We also make a lot of shakes, so having an ice maker is one thing I miss as well. We do use ice trays in the freezer, but it can take awhile to actually freeze the ice! #whowouldhavethought
The dishwasher is another big one. I love a clean kitchen, so I like to put dishes in the dishwasher as we use them. In the Airstream, we handwash each dish as we use it in order to keep the tiny space tidy. Luckily, our kids really love water play, so I’m hoping to use that to my advantage soon!
And of course, coffee!! I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you I miss my coffee maker that makes the perfect lattes with the press of one button. ️
So basically, I just miss my kitchen! 🤣
Here’s what I don’t miss that usually surprises people: our washer and dryer. In the beginning, I thought I would miss these a ton, but I actually don’t! Here’s why: at home, when I wash a load of clothes, sometimes I find it hard to get them to the dryer. Anyone else ever re-wash a load like 11 times before it makes it to the dryer?! Just me?! I feel like I should be in the Guinness Book of Records for this! When we’re traveling, I wash clothes once per week, usually four loads all at once. Then, I’m forced to dry them and put them up right away. It actually makes me feel super accomplished, and it just seems so much easier!
While I can’t help but miss a few things about home, in the grand scheme of things, I rarely even think about them again once we’ve hit the road. (Let’s be honest, dishwashers and nice coffee makers really are extras, aren’t they?) While I appreciate all of these things, it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make. The beauty of exploring, the connection we experience as a family, and the adventure of the road are all worth it!
